ENS Labour Day Classic Preview: Eskimos @ Stampeders

It’s that time of year. This year’s installment of the Labour Day rematch is here and this one is a big game for the Eskies. Calgary has really begun to round into form over the last few weeks and Edmonton needs to win this one in order to draw even atop the west division with the Stamps. I expect it to be a doozy today.

After a stellar first start in the CFL, Jimmy Franklin will be back under center today for the second week in a row. He was very good last week against Toronto. The guy is a playmaker. He has very good mobility to go with a strong arm and there seems to be a lot to like so far for the Eskimos with what they have in Franklin. Enough so that they finally realized they could unload Nichols this past week. Mike Reilly will be dressed on the sidelines which obviously means he is nearing a return, potentially in time for the rematch in the concrete district on Saturday which is GREAT news for the Esks. A healthy Reilly down the stretch combined with this defence is going to have the rest of the league shaking in their boots come playoff time.

Meanwhile, the Stampeders have won the past 11 regular season matchups against the Esks. It’s no secret that over the last several years Edmonton has struggled mightily playing in Calgary and they’ll need to be ready to go the second the ball leaves the tee today.

What Needs To Happen

Well if Jimmy Franks could repeat what he was able to last week that would be spectacular, but I’m not counting on that to happen. If he is able to avoid the costly mistakes like he did in last weeks start though, I like the Eskimos’ chances in this one.

The defence has to be on top of their game as well. Fortunately John Cornish won’t be dressing for Calgary which is a definite positive since he normally murders us, The pass rushers will have to make sure to get pressure on Bo Levi Mitchell every chance they get. If Mitchell has time, he will make it a long game for Eskimos fans.

Also, considering it’s the Labour Day Classic, I need to see a little bit of this:

What Can’t Happen

For the love of god, we can’t lose to these fucking guys again. Please. The Stamps have had their way with the Eskimos for far too long but that ends today. Book it.

What Is Going To Happen

Frank the Tank stays hot. The defence stays hot. The Stamps are going to wish they never showed up. Franklin connects with Bowman and Walker for two TDs each and Odell Wills eats Bo Levi Mitchell. Eskimos win 38-15.
