Morning After Blog: Curse Of The Staples Center

The five game heater was snapped last night. Not going to win them all I guess. All that L means is that Thursday night’s game against the Sharks just got A LOT more meaningful with home ice advantage on the line. Meaningful hockey in April. It’s still hard to believe.

1st Period

The Oil got on the power play early in this one, so naturally Connor extended his point streak before the Kings even knew what had hit them:

Milan Lucic was there to put the Oil up 1-0 after 97 roasted Derek Forbort down the wing and threw it out in front.

Just over halfway through the period, the Oilers extended their lead to 2-0:

NUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE! Look at him win that battle in front!! What a sight for sore eyes.

With the Oilers in control, it was time for the Iceman to cometh:

Did that hit the outside of the net? Maybe. But he looked damn good doing it.

2-0 after 20 minutes.

2nd Period

Alright. Edmonton is in the driver’s seat to kick the second period off aaaaaaaannnnd the Kings scored 2 minutes in.

Then they scored again 10 minutes later.

And then again 3 minutes later….

From 2-0 for the Oil to 3-2 for the Kings. Classic.

Thank god Nuge decided to show up:

Channeling his inner McDavid to blow by every King on the ice and deke Jonny Quick out of his pants to tie the game up.

3-3 after 40.

3rd Period

The third period did not go well.

Trevor Lewis and Tanner Pearson lit the lamp in the first 10 minutes and that was all she wrote.

Darnell Nurse added one with 5 minutes left, but that wasn’t enough.

LA added an ENG to put the nail in the coffin.

Final score: 6-4 Kings.

Final Thoughts

Well that was a tough night at the office. The 5 game heater comes to an end. Unless you were expecting the Oil to cruise into the playoffs on a 9 game heater, you knew this loss had to come eventually. Not the end of the world. Although it would be awesome to mix in a win in LA for the first time in five years.

HUGE game on Thursday night now. San Jose is banged up and reeling. If Edmonton can win this one heading into a weekend back-to-back against Vancouver, I like the chances of opening the playoffs at the Jungle next week. Need the Rog Mahal to be rocking.

McPoint!!! 95 on the year, and still with a 7 point cushion on Patty Kane. The Art Ross is pretty much locked up at this point.

How about that second line last night? Haven’t seen them win that many puck battles in a month. Against the Kings no less. I’ve been saying it all year, but christ… if that line keeps it up, the Oilers are going to be hard to beat in the big dance.

On the other hand, that third line last night? Woof.

Three games left on the year. Trying to be patient for the playoffs…. but give me the goddamn playoffs already. This city is ready to pop.

If the Game Was a Song

“Bounce Back” by Big Sean

Pretty sure this is the most up to date song we’ve ever used? Whatever. Bounce back in SJ tomorrow.

MOP

NUUUUUUGEEEEEE!!!!

His two goals on the night moved him to 18 on the year. Can he get 2 in the final weekend of the season to hit 20? You’re goddamn right he will.

GGG

What the hell…. Nuge earned both of these last night. Keep it up, lil’ buddy.
